John M. Barton, Sr. "Poppa John", 79, of Gowensville died July 15, 2015.  He was the husband of Kathleen Staggs Barton for 56 years.  He was born on November 13, 1935 in Spartanburg County, SC and was a native of the Campobello area.

He was the son of the late Buford F. and Ethel Walker Barton.  He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Gowensville where he served in many capacities including Deacon, Chairman of Deacons, Trustee, properties committee and usher.  He was a graduate of Campobello High School, served his country in the US Airborne Regimental Combat, and retired from Hoechst Celanese of Spartanburg after 25 years of service.

He passed his love for hunting and fishing on to his sons and grandsons. 

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, John M. Barton, Jr. "Johnny" (Elaine) and Kavin R. Barton (Stephanie); four grandchildren, Autumn Barton, Hannah Barton, Grant Barton and Luke
Barton; a brother, Jimmy Barton and a sister, Millie Cansler.

The family will receive friends from 9:30am - 11:00am on Saturday, July 18, 2015 at First Baptist Church of Gowensville.  Funeral services will follow at 11:00am in the church sanctuary officiated by Dr. Chad Rickenbaker, Rev. Harold Thompson, Rev. Bruce Schmidt and Rev. Josh Phillips.  Burial will be in First Baptist Church of Gowensville Cemetery.  The Men's Senior Sunday School Class will serve as honorary escort.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Baptist Church Gowensville Perpetual Cemetery Fund, 5650 Hwy 14, Landrum ,SC  29356.
