My prayers are with all of you as you remember and celebrate your Father's life. Michael recently told me that he hopes to one day be even half the man that Admiral Sutherland was. He was certain extraordinary. May God bless you during this very difficult time.

With love,
The McBrides

We were so sorry to hear of Paul's passing. He was an inspiration to us all in Southern Shores. He was a visionary and a true leader. Geri had an opportunity to work with him on the mid-Currituck Bridge initiative and he worked tirelessly to gather support across the area. We are so glad we had the opportunity to get to know him. Thank you for sharing him with us. Our sincere condolences on your loss.

My mother worked with Paul's mom during the 50's in Annapolis. I am 4 years younger and remember Paul from High School. I remember his mom and dad taking him to be stretched to meet the height requirement for the Academy. On his first trip to Italy he was kind enough to bring my mom and I gifts. I still have the engraved leather cigarette case from him. He was a good man from a good family.

I would like to send my condolences to Paul's wife and children. I was his first classman at the Naval Academy, and a close friend of his wonderful parents. It is always sad to lose a friend. He will be in my prayers. Sincerely, Gene Avallone

I was so sad to learn of Paul's passing. I was the town clerk of Southern Shores for twenty years. I spent many working hours with him during his service to the town. I always had great respect for him. He would stop in town hall to see me when he came to town. The last time I saw him was in Food Lion, we had a nice talk in that we made a joke of you never know who you will see there. I have fond memories and send my sympathy in your loss of a fine man. Paul was a wonderful friend. He led the Town of Southern Shores as Mayor with dedication to the citizens and community. His work as Chair of the dare Couty Tourism Board showed committment to the area and progress in advancing visitor experiences. He showed great leadership and insight on the Dare County Control Group during storm events. I have missed both he and Pat since they moved from the area but Paul made sure we kept in touch even recently with calls. He always gave of himself no matter where he lived. My deepest sympathy to your family. Paul will be missed.
Respectfully,
Renee Cahoon

Pat . . I was shocked and saddened when I read of Paul's passing. I still speak of him often in remembering all that he did for the Town of Southern Shores, the SSVFD, Dare EMS, and Dare County. I always enjoyed our conversations, and the email exchanges after you moved to Columbus. One of my favorite stories about Paul was on a Rescue 12 call at 3am, the ambulance left the scene enroute to the hospital, and Paul and I were standing in the middle of the street talking, when he suddenly said he had to go. I asked what did he have to do at 3am with such urgency. He replied, "I have turtle patrol"! He had to go to Nags Head, pick up the ATV, and ride up the beach looking for turtle tracks for the mother loggerhead turtles coming ashore to lay her eggs. Paul certainly left his mark on the Outer Banks, as I know he did wherever he lived and served with distinction. He will be missed!

We feel honored to have been neighbors of Paul. He was one of the first to welcome us as we visited TE. He was an incredible man, with much wisdom and knowledge. He will be greatly missed.

To the Sutherland family: so saddened to hear of the passing of Paul. Knew him through the local Military Officers Association of America. My late husband, who passed away in July 2016 of Alzheimer's disease, worked with Paul on the board of the Western NC chapter. Paul and I many times compared notes regarding the progression of the insidious disease that afflicted our beloved spouses. Paul was a kind, wise and caring man. He will be missed by many. My sincere condolences to your family.

Dear Family members - i worked with Paul on numerous duties at Tryon Estates and in the Western Region of NCCCRA for a number of years. Your father was a "dooer" and always went the extra mile to get the task accomplished. TE will not be the same with out his presence. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all as you continue down the way of life that he set for each of you. Thinking of you all, Kaye Steele

Admiral Sutherland made all of our meetings memorable by his warm welcoming manner and genuine interest in furthering the well-being of his fellow humans. He stood much taller in my estimation than his relatively small physical stature . . . I shall always cherish his memory as I go forth inspired by his example.

Such a sweet man, always a smile on his face. I'm so glad I had the opportunity to know him. I knew him from coming in the doctors office in Landrum. He will be missed. With deepest sympathy.
