Willie Vernon Matthews, 85, of Campobello passed away on December 15, 2020. He was born in Newberry on June 24, 1935 to the late Claude Vernon and Mary Johnson Matthews and was the husband of Peggy Shelley Matthews.
He was a member of FBC Campobello where he served as a Sunday School teacher for many years. He also served his community as town council member where he worked closely with the police department and his "favorite son", Chad McNeil.
He began his teaching career at Latta High School, Latta, SC in 1958 where he met his wife, Peggy. He taught in St. Stephens, SC and Belle Glade, FL before settling in Campobello in 1970. He taught math and coached football and basketball at Campobello Gramling. Upon retiring, he traveled the US as a driver for Good News Travel and was a proud driver of the Clemson girls basketball team receiving a 10 year recognition plaque at their annual banquet.
He delivered Mobile Meals for 15 years and enjoyed his morning meals daily at the Dutch Plate with his friends and was most proud when Patrick gave him a special chair at the table and a meal named after him, "The Willie" on the menu.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Peggy Shelley Matthews; three daughters Shelley Murphey (Dell), Rosemary Matthews and Valerie Dukes (Wes); two grandsons Todd Hill and Brandon Hill (Destaynie); and a great grandson Brayden Hill; step grandchildren Linsey Cooke (Jason), Lacey Curry (Adam), Brianna Settles (Thomas), and Jenna Abernathy (Stephen); and two step great grandchildren, Blaise and Jude.
A private graveside service will be held at Campobello First Baptist Church Cemetery.
