Tony Russell Hyder, 81, of Landrum, SC, passed away on December 29, 2025, surrounded by his family after a brief illness.
He was the son of the late Lawrence Lee "LL" and Leila Jones Hyder, and the devoted husband of Evelyn May Hyder for 53 years.
Tony was the President and co-owner of Hyder Construction Company. He will be remembered for his signature overalls and wide brimmed hats, his deep pride and love for his family, his generosity, and his kind, caring spirit. A man of few words, when he spoke, everyone listened. He led by example and instilled a strong work ethic in his children and grandchildren. Any day of the week, you could find him working on a piece of heavy equipment or driving a dump truck. When he wasn't working or helping someone, he was on a tractor or tending his garden in the summer, sitting on the sidelines of a football field, sitting in the bleachers at a basketball or baseball game or wrestling match, or attending a dance recital supporting his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his three children, all of Landrum: Jason (Sherri) Hyder, Amanda (CK) Surface, and Sarah (Joe) Collins; and by a very special niece he and Evelyn raised, Brooke (CJ) Robinson. He is also survived by eight grandchildren-Nathan (Jessie), Emilee, Noah (Abi), and Adam Hyder, Graham Surface, Nolan, Landon, and Norah Collins-and one great grandson, Jase Hyder.
He is further survived by his brothers and sisters: Frances (Billy) Parker, Steve "Bill" (Sandra) Hyder, Clark Hyder, Austin "Dink" (Barbara) Hyder, Phillip (Karen) Hyder, Debra (Gregg) Staggs, Larry (Debbie) Hyder, Jody (Coel) Lockhart, and brother-in-law Mike Carswell, as well as many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; his brothers Berton and Jerry Hyder; his sister Peggy Carswell; and a special great niece, Gianna Robinson.
The family will receive friends from 5:00-8:00 PM on Friday, January 2, 2026 at Petty Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 PM on Saturday, January 3, 2026 at Petty Funeral Home conducted by Dr. Chad Rickenbaker.
