Richard Joseph Sweeney, 71, of Campobello, SC passed away unexpectedly at home on September 20th, 2024
Also known as Rick, Ricky, Papa and The Sultan, Rick was born to the late Elwin (Red) Sweeney and Alice (Gushue). He was the oldest of five siblings and grew up in Hyde Park, MA spending summers in The Rocky Nook neighborhood of Kingston, MA. He attended Catholic Memorial High School and Stonehill College. The majority of his career was spent in the healthcare industry.
Retiring to Campobello, Rick set his roots fast and deep into the community and began attending the Town Council Meetings. He sat on the Spartanburg County Foster Care Review Board and chaired the Campobello Planning and Zoning Committee. Retirement also allowed him to spend time with his adored grandsons, Zachary and Kellan Krom as well as pursuing his passions: playing softball and vacationing in Mexico.
Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 25 years, Mary M. (Cronin) Sweeney; daughter Cassie Krom and her husband Matthew of Hendersonville, NC; son Jeffrey Knox of Norwood, MA. Siblings, Karen Carvill and Brad of Readville, MA; Kevin Sweeney and Virginia of VT; Marybeth Sweeney of Hyde Park, MA and partner Bobby Malloy; Allison Wilkie and Carter of Roslindale, MA; treasured family and friends, Marsha and Curt Rodman of Westwood, MA in addition to his many nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by his parents.
There will be a visitation in South Carolina at the Petty funeral Home 124 North Trade St. in Landrum on October 11th from 4:00 to 6:00.
A Celebration of Life will be held in Massachusetts on November 3rd from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the American Legion Hall in Dedham, MA.
