Rebecca "Betty" Laughter, 80, of 6 Leonard Street, Inman, SC went home to be with her Lord on October 20, 2021 after a short illness. Betty was born Old Order Amish in Holmes County, OH to the late Simon and Anna Hershberger October 5, 1941. She married Daniel A. Mast, Sr. at Central Mennonite Church in 1956 in Dover, DE. In 1977, she relocated from Dover, DE to Inman, SC. She is survived by her children: Rosalie Dow of Dover, DE, Daniel A Mast, Jr. (Kathy) of Rock Hill, SC, Denise Broadwater (Greg) of Duncan, SC, Darryl A. Mast (Veronica) of Boiling Springs, SC and Robin Coker of Inman, SC. Additionally she is survived by 17 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death her by three siblings: Katie Watt, Levi Hershberger and Henry Hershberger, and she is survived by her brothers Edward "Eddie" Hershberger of Campobello, SC and Daniel Hershberger of Fredricksburg, OH.
Betty owned a residential care facility, Oakridge Community Care Home, in Inman, SC beginning in 1981. She cared for over 2,000 residents during her tenure as administrator for more than 40 years. She cared and was an advocate for the down and out, those who suffered mental illness and homelessness. She was recently awarded a meritorious award for being one of the first residential care administrators in our state.
Betty was known by the locals as "Ranch Lady" raising over 80 head of Texas Longhorn cattle on her farm off Old Mill Road in Campobello, SC. She had a open door policy and was known for her humor and her good Amish food.
The celebration of her exceptional life of service to others will begin with a viewing ceremony Friday, October 22 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm and her funeral Saturday, October 23 11:00am, both at Petty Funeral Home in Landrum, SC.
