Listen up Ol' boy & Ol' gals this is my story...
The world became just a little bit duller on February 25, 2025, when Monty "Papaw" Joe Hyder, 73 passed away at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville, TN. Born in Spartanburg, SC, on December 26, 1951, Monty spent most of his life in Landrum or Campobello, SC, in his later years he moved to Kodak, TN.
To know Monty was to love him. He was a beloved Daddy, Grandfather, Great Grandfather & friend. Monty had a talent for giving you trouble for one minute and turning around to cry with you the next. He’d offer you the shirt off his back while handing out life lessons only he could devise. Monty was truly something else—he will be missed more than anything.
Monty was known for his unwavering work ethic as a heavy equipment pan operator, a career that defined much of his professional life. His skill and relentless determination were admired by all who worked alongside him. He was the best in town when it came to running a Pan. That red dirt was his happy place for many years. Monty's favorite line to everyone was "I will cut the headline off the Sunday paper; without rippin the paper."
Monty was processed into death by his mom Jean Gowan Hyder, dad Joe Hyder & Brenda Metcalf Hyder. Meanwhile, the family left to convey his legacy includes his daughters Amber Metcalf of Kodak, TN and Reba Smith of Cleveland, North Carolina; a son Ricky Smith of Campobello, SC. Four grandchildren Alexa & Tyler Reno, Elizabeth Gist, Kimora Gist, and Noah Gist; along with five great-grandchildren Tyler Reno Jr., Aleigha Reno, Khloe Reno, Novalee Reno, and Ember Reno. Monty also leaves behind Jody "JoJo" Lockhart & Rita H. Hyder along with many other family & friends. Monty was a family man through and through. He loves his babies more than anything in the world.
A graveside service will be held at 12:30pm, Thursday, March 6, 2025 at Redeemed Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Jimmy Metcalf officiating.
The family will receive friends from 11:00am to 12:00pm at Petty Funeral Home, Landrum, SC.
Monty may have left our world, but his wit, charm, and spirit live on in all who knew him. Here's to Monty, who always kept us on our toes.
