Mary Douglass Wortman, 94, of Landrum, SC went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, January 9, 2024.
Mary was born in Newark, NJ, June 21, 1929, to Leslie and Maude Douglass. She was the devoted wife of Bill Wortman for 68 years, mother of Paul Wortman (Rebecca), Martha Browne (Scott) and Sarah Gannon; grandmother of Zack Wortman (Jody) and Curtis Browne (Andrea); and great grandmother of Sally and Eloise Wortman.
Mary prepared to be an illustrator of children's books at the Rhode Island School of Design. In 1954, she attended the Biblical Seminary in New York where she met Bill and the two were married in 1955. In 1960, the couple was accepted by the Latin America Mission and assigned to Costa Rica, and soon after Bill, Mary and son Paul left for Costa Rica. Mary used her artistic abilities to design tracts, book covers and graphic materials. Both daughters were born in Costa Rica. In 1977, Mary's role changed from missionary to pastor's wife as the coupled ministered fifteen years at Pascack Bible Church, Hillsdale, NJ.
Mary's life verse was 2 Corinthians 5:15, "And He died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for Him who died for them and was raised again."
Rev. Donna Heinzenknecht will lead the private graveside ceremony for the family at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
