Lucy Gramling Crowley

Lucy Gramling Crowley, 86, passed away on March 31, 2026. She was born February 10, 1940 to Ben and Annie Lou Gramling and grew up in Gramling, South Carolina. Lucy graduated from Converse College and then attended the University of Georgia where she met her husband of 63 years, Jim Crowley. She is survived by her daughter, Anna Carlton Crowley and granddaughter, Anna Catherine Gansereit. She was predeceased by her sister, Jo Willa Gramling Lopez and son in law, Matthew Gansereit. 

She had a great love for teaching children. Lucy started her long teaching career at Spartanburg Day School where she taught English. After earning her Master’s degree from Furman University, she worked in Spartanburg County schools setting up libraries across District One. She returned to Spartanburg Day School as the librarian and drama teacher for a total of nineteen years. Lucy was then recruited to be the Elementary Dean of the newly formed Hilton Head Preparatory School, where she again loved working with the young children for another twenty-one years. Lucy served on the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Evaluation Committee and consulted with schools around the state on accreditation. 

Lucy was a lifelong member of Gramling United Methodist Church and served in many roles during that time, including leading the children’s division. She lived her life with quiet faith and Christian love that showed in her support and kindness to others. Lucy volunteered with the Red Cross, manning the overnight lines during disasters and assisting servicepeople overseas. She also volunteered with Special Olympics in Beaufort County.

Lucy’s greatest love was her family. Her dedication and selfless care were an immeasurable gift of support when it was most needed.

The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 pm Saturday, April 4, 2026 at Gramling Methodist Church.   A funeral service will follow at 2:00 pm in the church sanctuary.     Burial will be in the church cemetery.
