Mrs. Evelyn Lorene Hannabass Sherman passed away peacefully on October 18, 2025.
A resident of Tryon Estates in Columbus, NC, she was 87 years old.
Lorene was born on February 15, 1938, in the District of Columbia, to James and
Evelyn (Swain) Hannabass. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Charles Thomas
Sherman of King George, VA, and sister Gladys Hannabass. Mrs. Sherman is survived
by her three sons - Charles Michael Sherman (Christine), Steven Douglas Sherman
(Nicolette), and Matthew Thomas Sherman (Rosemary); grandchildren Laura Sanchez
(Daniel), Jessica Dutta (Manas), Colin Sherman, Justin Sherman, and Lauren Sherman;
great-grandchildren Charles Sanchez, Liliana Sanchez, Gia Dutta and Dhruv Dutta, her
sister Mrs. Jeanine Gregory and several nieces and nephews.
Lorene grew up near Washington DC, where she met Tom at a church retreat. They
were married, and after his service in the Air Force, Tom and Lorene moved their family to
Westfield, NJ, where they resided for 25 years, becoming active in the First Baptist
Church of Westfield. It was through the church family that Lorene and Tom
developed a lasting, close friendship with Reverend William and Bobbie Frederickson
and with their daughters Autumn and Brittany; becoming the girls’ favorite, beloved aunt
and uncle.
As a Speech Pathologist, Lorene worked with children at The Children’s Specialized
Hospital in Westfield and privately in King George, VA. She earned her BA from the
University of Maryland (1960), MA from Kean College (1978), and multiple certifications
including Speech Pathology (1989). After retirement, she became a Reiki Master and
Healing Touch Practitioner in Barnegat, NJ, as well as volunteering at the local library and
as a home hospice care visitor to many seniors within the community. She continued to share
her Healing Touch skills with the residents at Tryon Estates in Columbus, NC.
Lorene was a strong, vibrant, independent woman devoted to her family, friends, and
colleagues. She lived with all-embracing values and an inclusive faith. Lorene will be
deeply missed but remembered always with love and rejoicing.
The Sherman family extends their appreciation and thanks to Mrs. Jackie Wheeler of
Tryon Estates, a lifelong friend, who provided comfort during Lorene’s final hours; a
friendship which began in grammar school encompassing a lifetime of adventures and
precious memories. The family also wishes to acknowledge and thank Tryon Estates
staff members for their dedicated support and nurturing care of Lorene throughout her
years of residence.
Lorene’s internment arrangements and memorials will be announced at a later date.
“Mom, God heard you jingling your keys! Rest in everlasting peace.”
