Joseph James Brown, DMD, 77, passed away peacefully with his family by his side at his home on November 20, 2023, on the Cliffs of Glassy, South Carolina, where he was currently residing. Joseph is the son of Bart and Martha Brown and grew up the youngest of 10 siblings in the Highlands in Louisville, Kentucky. He attended St. James Parish School, St. Xavier High School, Bellarmine College and graduated from the University of Kentucky Dental School after serving in the United States Military.
He leaves behind his wife, Diane; a son, Ethan Brown of Santa Monica, California; a daughter, Lauren Brown of Louisville, Kentucky; two stepsons, Matthew Schmidt of Suffolk, Virginia, and Michael Schmidt of Indianapolis, Indiana; nine grandchildren; a great grandson; a brother, Bart Brown, Jr.; two sisters, Mary Ann Quesenberry, and Kathleen Kelley. He was predeceased by his first wife, Maxine, and six of his nine siblings.
He practiced dentistry in Bartow, Florida for several years after his graduation from dental school and then returned to his home state of Kentucky where he practiced for almost 30 years. He was adored by his many patients and often they stopped by the office just to hear one of his stories. He loved history and traveled extensively. For twelve years he had a home in Rosneath, Scotland where he spent many summers enjoying hill walking, golfing, spending time with neighbors and hosting relatives and friends.
He adored his grandchildren and extended family of nieces and nephews. He had a gift of kindness and great dentistry skills which he used daily to help others.
Services will be held at 11:00am on January 12, 2024 at Holy Spirit Parish, Newport, KY. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society https://www.givenow.lls.org/.
