John Calhoun Briggs, 71, of Landrum, SC, left this world to be with his Heavenly Father in his home after a brief illness on March 6, 2025. John was a retired Air Force veteran who had also worked for the Veterans Administration in Salisbury, NC. Upon returning to Landrum, SC, he volunteered for the non-profit Operation Hope where he enjoyed meeting new people, lending a helping hand to those in need, and was loved by many.
John was born on November 20, 1953 at Spartanburg Regional Hospital to William (Bill) Blount Briggs and Kate Brown Briggs of Landrum, SC. After earning a degree in Computer Programming from Spartanburg Technical College, he joined the Air Force where he was stationed in Goldsboro, NC, doing a yearlong stint in South Korea, before moving to Iron Mountain, MI.
John had four children - Jamie Briggs (Kim) of Chesnee, SC and Amy Ottwell (Chris) of Fort Mill, SC, and Madison Lane Briggs of Wisconsin and John Abram Briggs of Arizona; five grandchildren, Brittany Briggs Bishop (Drew) Jacob Briggs (Michelle) and Jayme Briggs of Chesnee, SC, Emma Baron and Kaleb Baron of Fort Mill, SC; and one great grandson Reed Briggs.
He was preceded in death by his father, mother and an older brother, William "Billy" Briggs Jr. He is survived by his sister Anita Caldwell Briggs and brother Robert Blake Briggs (Debbie) of Landrum, SC; nephews Robert Briggs, Jr and Miles Briggs , niece Nicole Briggs, and aunt Barbara Briggs of Landrum, SC.
John had a warm smile, a hearty laugh, and gave the best hugs! Any outdoor adventure- whether it be hunting, fishing, boating, camping or riding motorcycles through back country roads brought a smile to his face! He loved to share his passions- his love of nature, service to others and Christ were the central themes throughout his life. In recent years Jack took things a little slower, spending time with family and giving back to others through volunteerism. Though he will be deeply missed, his spirit will continue to be a light for those that knew him.
A graveside service will be held at the Landrum Cemetery at 649 E. Rutherford St., Landrum SC on Friday, March 21 at 2:00 pm conducted by Rev. Mark Bishop. In lieu of flowers, please make a donations in John's name to Operation Hope, PO Box 736, Landrum, SC 29356.
