John Broadus Maybry, III, died on Tuesday evening, February 20, 2024, at the Upstate Community Hospice House in Landrum, South Carolina. He was born to John Broadus Maybry, Jr, and Rose Jones Maybry on October 23, 1940, in Spartanburg, SC. He was the older brother to Rosanne Maybry.
John Broadus graduated from Chapman High School in 1958 and received Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Clemson University in 1962 and 1965, respectively. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1963-1965, serving aboard the USS Newport News. After Clemson, he worked for the Dow Chemical Company, which moved him to Charlotte, NC, Lubbock, TX, Kansas City, MO, Honolulu, HI, and finally Baton Rouge, LA. He met Janet Frances Hamilton in Charlotte and married her on August 15, 1970, and remained married to her until her death in June of 2022.
John Broadus and Janet were blessed with three children: Jay, Molly, & Luke (married to Leah). They raised their family and made their home in Campobello, a community that he dearly loved. He was especially proud to be a member of First Baptist Church of Campobello and served it faithfully in numerous capacities. He was also a long-time member of the Inman Rotary Club, Campobello Civic Club, and Gideon’s International. He finally volunteered for Meals on Wheels, the Good News Club, and visiting and caring for the elderly in the community.
He was predeceased by his parents, wife, and sister. He is survived by his three children as well as seven grandchildren: Reece Dalton, Riley Hamilton, & Rose Tinsley Blackwell, Hannah Louise Maybry, & Julia Wells, Caroline McClain, & John Robertson Maybry. He loved his family deeply and well, taught them how to treat people, and gave them eternal faith and hope. His life exemplified the fundamental yet radical conviction that all people are created equally in the image of God.
Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon, February 24, at 2:00 at his beloved church, First Baptist of Campobello. Rev. Gary Rogers will officiate. Visitation will be after the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Building Fund of First Baptist Church, Campobello, SC. Petty Funeral Home in Landrum is in charge of arrangements.
