John Paul Basarab, 84, of Columbus, NC, passed away on Thursday, December 18, 2025. He was the husband of Yvonne Therese Malone Basarab and the son of the late John and Mary Ocilka Basarab and his late stepmother, Johanna Sramaty Basarab.

He was a parishioner of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Tryon, NC. John was a veteran of the United States Navy and a retired truck driver.

In addition to his wife, Yvonne, he is survived by two daughters, Yvonne Basarab Hale (Dan) and Michelle; granddaughters, Isabelle and Olivia Hale; a sister, Bernadette Vaughn.

He was predeceased by a sister, Rosemary Basarab; a half brother, Michael Basarab; a step sister, Johanna Misura; step brothers, Edward and John Sramaty.

A funeral mass will be held at 10:00AM, Monday , December 29, 2025 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Tryon, NC, with Father Matthew Buettner officiating.

Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens, Landrum, SC where the United States Navy will perform military honors.
