Jason "Jaybird" Allen Hughes, 44, of Campobello, passed away on November 3, 2025 surrounded by his loving family. He was the son of Phillip H. Hughes and Joyce Elaine Dimsdale Pack.
The dash between your two dates, birth and death- For many, it's just a hyphen marking time between the years, but in that little dash is a lifetime of laughter, love and tears. (Linda Ellis)
He had an inventive childhood full of neck braces, arm slings, & a bruised brain. The epitome of living life to the fullest on the clumsiest level. His legacy represented the simple things in life filled with spending time with his boys and daughter and staying in the woods. His love for cooking and his patriotism was 2nd to none. He was 100% authentically himself. He had the best witty sense of redneck humor, a true jokester. He took pride in working hard and doing a great job at anything that involved his focus. He was never one for complaining and didn't partake in casting judgement on others. When the world seemed impossible, he made it a point to reassure everyone that "everything's going to be ok". There was no point in his life that he wasn't taking care of someone else even in the final days of his own sickness, he still quietly asked us the question "You ok"?
He's everywhere and nowhere all at once- a constant thought, a lingering ache, a whisper in the background of our lives. He is stitched in every corner of our minds. His love spills past the edges of his life and settles quietly in the ones of us he left behind. His voice plays in our memories like a song we will always know by heart. There will always be more to say and more to love that never got the chance to be spoken. We are grieving the loss of the reflection of ourselves that we saw in him- childhood memories, a parent who knew every expression, inside jokes and a friend that could finish our sentences. He was the kind of man that children and strangers were instantly drawn to.
He always came alive in the Fall and again that holds true, as he is cancer free reborn in heaven this Fall. We will forever remember his beautiful blue eyes and infectious smile.
Favorite quotes:
"You little sissy"- Said when he was trying to keep things lighthearted or when he was giving courage to pursue something unthinkable.
"If it won't stop, walk it out"- Applied to anything challenging ahead.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his sons, Michael Bryce Hughes and Ethan Braeden Hughes; a daughter, Jaci Asheton Hughes; a brother Thomas Phillip Hughes (Amanda); his sisters, April Dawn Hughes (Ashley) and Ashley Eve Ferrara (Casey).
