Glenn Shepherd Obituary

On Sunday, October 13, 2024, Glenn David Shepherd returned home to his lord and heavenly family after a brief and sudden medical emergency. Born to Chares Benson Shepherd, Sr. and Willia May (Billie) Dockery Shepherd on Dec. 27, 1948, Glenn lived most of his life in Greenville County, SC, a devoted husband, father, and brother. He is pre-deceased by his parents and brother Charles Benson Shepherd, Jr. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Kay Greene Shepherd; children Chris Tucker, Angela Shepherd (Brian Cooper), and Michael Shepherd (Arianna Squillace); brother Philip Wayne Shepherd (Kimberley Poole); grandchildren Jacob and Allison Tucker, Zandyr and Arianna Shepherd, Aiden Cooper; and nephew William Shepherd (Antoinette Petrelli).

Stalwart and stoic, with a dry sense of humor and quirky wit, Glenn shouldered responsibility early as the eldest of three brothers.  Alongside his father and brothers, he worked nights and weekends at the family business – a service station on Poinsett Highway. He graduated from Clemson University in 1970 and trained to work on computers at Brookline Carpets, launching a lifelong career as a computer programmer and database analyst. Glenn fit in well with the 1970s early computer geek culture, and always had a ready laugh for Monty Python. From Ron Rash and T.R. Pearson to the Rolling Stones and Frank Zappa, he had an eclectic taste and an abiding passion for both books and music.  Glenn loved history, math, logic puzzles, and tinkering with electronics and stereo equipment. Summer vacations were often spent at museums, national parks and historic sites. Somewhat reminiscent of Sherlock Holmes, he could usually be found with a tobacco pipe in hand.

When he retired at the age of 70, he began daily 2-mile dog walks and enjoyed stopping by and swapping stories with neighbors. Glenn loved animals and gained a late life hobby of feeding and watching birds. After he retired he devoted his time to reading, music, and family. More than anything, he will be remembered as the person everyone relied upon.

Throughout life, Glenn loved to laugh, although his oft sardonic sense of humor wasn’t for everyone. He especially got a kick out of the antics of his grandchildren, dogs and squirrels.

He was a member of Piedmont Park Baptist Church in Greenville, where his mother taught Sunday school for many years.

A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2024 at 2 pm at Petty’s Funeral Home in Landrum, SC – preceded by visitation with family beginning at 1 pm. Glenn’s nephew William Shepherd will officiate the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy – 372 Merrimon Avenue, Asheville NC 28801 or at Appalachian.org.
