Pastor Eugene B. Young of Landrum, passed away on August 4, 2024, at his residence. Fondly called Robin by his childhood friends and Pastor Gene by his congregation. He was a native of Towanda, Pennsylvania where he graduated from high school with the class of 1956. He attended many colleges during his 20 years of service in the United States Air Force. He served one tour of duty in Vietnam. After leaving the service, Pastor Gene received his theological degree in 1979 and his master's degree in 1993 at Andrews University. Before he retired in 2007, he was in the ministry for 29 years, pastoring Seventh-day Adventist churches in Allegan, Michigan; Swanton, Napoleon, Chillicothe, Jackson and Portsmouth, Ohio; Rapid City, South Dakota; Charleston, Greenville, South Carolina; and Tryon, North Carolina.
He is survived by his wife, Stella Bickford Young, and daughters, Sindy (Rodney) Vorderstrasse, and Tina (Craig) Staehr; stepdaughters Wendi Hartsoe, Tammy Louya, Michelle (Dave) Travis, and Tondi (Jeff) Campbell; daughter-in-law, Cindy Hill; 10 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. Prior to his death, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ellen Doris Ruhl Young; his parents, Adrian and Ruth Ann Minier Young; a daughter, Dagmar Young; a son, Detlef Young; a stepson, Greg Hill; a grandson, Johnathan Young; two son-in-laws, Charlie Hartsoe, and Randy Louya; and a sister, Sarah Ann Deskins.
Pastor Gene was loved by all who knew him. He loved his family dearly and he proudly served his country. The theme of his ministry was... "Jesus is coming soon. Praise the Lord, what a reunion that will be.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 9, 2024, at 4:00pm at Tryon Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 2820 Lynn Rd, Tyron, NC 28782 officiated by Pastor Mark Heisey and Pastor Bob Grant.
