Duane Edward Howery gained his angel wings on Monday, May 27, 2024 (Memorial Day) surrounded by his family. He was born August 19,1944 in Antler, North Dakota to George Franklin and Laura Ledoux Howery.
He chose to leave school at the young age of 17, joining the US Navy. His service included being stationed on the USS Columbus during Vietnam. He loved fishing, his country and the freedoms it was founded on, the United States military and most of all his family. Duane has never met a stranger and always had a service coin for anyone who had served the country. If you had the privilege of knowing him, you knew he was one of the most positive people in the world. He loved to quote Norman Vincent Peale's "the power of positive thinking." He would say "don't say I can't," instead say "I will." He always looked at any life challenge with a God centered view. He believed that with God and a positive attitude all things were possible.
Duane spent his final days in a beautiful mountain cottage built by the hands of his son-in-law Keith whom he called "son." He absolutely loved sitting on the porch in his rocker making gardening plans and giving his grand-dogs belly scratches. He never missed a nightly episode of "Wheel of Fortune" and believed it was always a good time for some peanut butter ice cream.
There is no doubt in our minds that he was greeted at heaven's gate by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We find peace in knowing this. He always said in life or death "either way he was a winner."
He leaves behind his daughters, Dawn Howery Williams (Keith), Dana Howery Moore (Jeremy), grandchildren, Kayleigh Williams, McKenzie Williams, Christian Williams, Cooper Moore, Bryanna Howery, Jake Howery, Taralynn Martin, sisters, Elaine Howery Feland, Glenda Howery Tofteland (Kenny), brother, David Henry Howery (Catherine) and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by both parents, his brother, Wilford "Sunny" George Howery and his son, Robert Howery.
In lieu of flowers, we ask you to make donations to any military nonprofit organization of your choosing in honor of his memory.
Duane will be buried with full military honors during a private ceremony with immediate family and friends.
