Dorothy Atkins West, age 92, of Campobello, South Carolina, passed away on August 15, 2025. Dorothy, or “Dot” as she was affectionately known, was born in Campobello on October 11, 1932.
She grew up in the rolling foothills of the South Carolina upstate, where she met Charner, her husband of 73 years, while swimming with friends at Rainbow Lake in Spartanburg. The two soon married and moved to the Midlands for the next thirty years. Through many joys and challenges, Dot raised three daughters and helped start and run a thriving business alongside her husband. Following retirement, she returned to Campobello to live out her remaining years.
Dot was known for her stylish flair, strong temperament, bright smile, and affinity for fashion and glamour. She loved going shopping, to the beauty parlor, or out for an early-evening walk on the beach. She was also a doting grandmother, often spotted on hot South Carolina summer days cruising around town with her grandchildren in her cherished silver coupe convertible.
She is survived by her three daughters Kathy West of Campobello, Karen West and Janet West King, both of Myrtle Beach, and her three grandchildren, Kathleen King Smith (Gregg) of Myrtle Beach, Lorrie King of Washington, DC, and Joseph King, III, of Miami, FL. She is preceded in death by her husband, Charner Brooks West, her father, Almond Atkins, her mother, Julia Odessa Atkins, and her brother, Cohen Atkins.
A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at 11:00am at the Motlow Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, 2300 Motlow Creek Road, Campobello, SC, 29322, where she will be laid to rest alongside her husband, parents, and brother.
In lieu of flowers the family ask that donations be made to Motlow Creek Baptist Church.
