Doris "Dot" McClure Obituary

Doris “Dot” (Owens) McClure (91), affectionately known as Ma, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 27, 2024.

Doris was born to Cephas and Lillie Owens on February 10, 1933. After graduating from Tryon High School, she worked at Cowan’s Grocery, Landrum Mills, and the McClure Farm. She married Hovey McClure in 1952. As an Army Officer’s wife, she moved with her young family to several states and overseas to Germany. In 1957, Doris and Hovey returned to Landrum, where they raised five children and celebrated 66 faithful years of marriage.

Doris was a member of Fairview Baptist Church, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, the American Legion Auxiliary, the International Food Service Executive Association (IFSEA), and the Shriners.  She enjoyed dancing, bowling, and playing bingo. Her endearing personality and kindness won her friends everywhere she went. She loved knitting sweaters, quilting, and growing flowers in her garden.

The consummate homemaker, Doris blessed friends and family with her wonderful cooking and generous spirit. She was a devoted mother and Ma, proudly supporting her family’s endeavors and celebrating their accomplishments. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Left to cherish her memories are her two sons, William Hovey (Sueanne) McClure, Jr., and Eric McClure; her two daughters, Jeanie (Johnnie) Gooch, and Lisa Dyer; her grandchildren, Ashley, Sarah, Mac, Strib, Jake, Emily, Malcolm, Clint, and Selena; her great-grandchildren, Harris, Ian, Mason, Madi, Mel, Ethan, Emma, Sawyer, Landon, Ava, Remi, Quincy, Little Johnny, Esme, Cede, and Emma; and her brother, Gene Owens.

She was predeceased by her loving husband, William Hovey McClure, her daughter, Kaye Harris, her granddaughter, Amber Hulsey, and her grandson, Wesley Harris, her dear brothers, Robert, Melvin (Punch), and Gary (Speedy); and her beloved sisters, Frances and Elaine.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2 pm on Friday, April 5, 2024, at Petty Funeral Home. Visitation with the family will be from 1-2pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Fairview Baptist Church at 705 Highway 14 W Landrum, SC 29356.
