Christopher M. Owens, 64, of Landrum passed away on September 27, 2024.
Christopher Mark Owens lived a life dedicated to serving others and glorifying God. Born in 1960 to John ‘Calvin’ and Shirley Owens, Chris spent most of his years in the Landrum area, where he developed a deep connection to his community. After graduating from Landrum High School, Chris pursued his passion for the outdoors, earning an associate degree in Turf Management from Catawba Valley Technical College and embarking on a career as a golf course superintendent at prestigious clubs like Grove Park Inn, Fairfield Country Club, Spartanburg Country Club and Scotch Meadows Country Club. His expertise and tireless work ethic made him an invaluable asset to these organizations as he maintained the pristine courses that brought joy to golfers across the region. However, Chris’s true calling extended beyond the fairways, as he felt a profound desire to minister to those in need. In order to fulfill that need, Chris transitioned into the utility industry where he would have weekends free working as an underground supervisor for Pike Electric. However, after a serious accident, which ended his career with Pike, he never lost sight of his spiritual convictions and his love for lawn management. Chris poured his heart into serving as a deacon, and eventually served as chairman of deacons at First Baptist Church Landrum, he also led a weekly men’s Bible study at the nearby Tyger River Correctional Facility, sharing the transformative power of the gospel with incarcerated individuals. Chris also regularly attended a weekly Bible Study Fellowship at Boiling Springs First Baptist. His unwavering faith and compassion touched the lives of countless people, and he continued to find strength in God’s plan for him, even as he battled through double knee replacements and a liver transplant following a battle with cancer. Chris is survived by his mother, Shirley Owens, brothers Rick Owens (Roxann) of Simpsonville, SC and Scott Owens (Lisa) of Landrum, SC. Nephews Will Owens and Ian Owens, nieces Stacey Long and Taylor Messick (Andrew), as well as seven great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, John ‘Calvin’ Owens. Though he never married, Chris’ love for his family, especially his nieces and nephews, was evident in the way he embraced them with a warm smile and kind words. His life, marked by selflessness, resilience, and an unshakable commitment to is beliefs, serves as in inspiring testament to the power of faith, perseverance, and the profound impact one person can have on their community and the friends around them.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, October 12,2024 at First Baptist Church of Landrum conducted by Rev Mark Bishop. The family will visit with friends following the service.
