Carron "Gamma" Stephens Obituary

On July 28th, 2025, Carron was freed from her long battle with a debilitating illness. Born on July 8th, 1942, Carron was the daughter of the late Myrtle and Harold Smith. She was a graduate of Chapman High School and spent her life grounded in love, family, hard work and quiet strength.

Carron served as a lab technician for 20 years and made history as the first woman mail carrier to retire from the city of Spartanburg.

Carron had a remarkable spirit and a creative soul. She designed the blueprints for her own home, a space that became a sanctuary for her granddaughter Jessie and Jessie’s friends – a home filled with laughter, love and the smell of summer cookouts. She was also a gifted quilter, crafting beautiful pieces that brought warmth and comfort. Known for hosting family gatherings and exceptional 4th of July celebrations, Carron created memories that will live on for generations.

A talented skier, last skiing in her 70’s, Carron spent many summers on the water, taking the kids tubing and skiing every day. She had a gift for gardening – her yard was a living painting, planned so that something beautiful was always in bloom. She was a woman of resilience, independence and generosity.

Carron is survived by her loving son, Gregg Stephens; her cherished granddaughter, Jessie Stephens Smith (Branden); her devoted sisters, Judy Kimbrell (Allen) and Jennie Howard; and her dear brothers, Rick Smith (Edith) and David Smith (Sandra); and numerous nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her beloved friend, Sandy Turner, who remained a constant presence and source of joy in her life.

In the final chapter of her life, Carron was cared for by an extraordinary hospice team, who became part of her extended family. She was lovingly supported by Nurse Michaela, Nurse Brandy, Chaplain Latricia, her Social Worker Nancy, and the staff who cared for her at Tryon Estates, whose compassion and presence brought comfort to Carron and her family in her final days.

Known by all who loved her as Gamma, Carron leaves a legacy of spunk, strength and unconditional love.

Receiving of friends will be held on Saturday, August 2nd, 2025 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Bobo Funeral Chapel.
