Alice Turner Obituary

Alice Smith Turner

October 21, 1928 ~ February 12, 2023

A vital member and supporter of her community and upstate South Carolina, Alice Smith Turner of 525 Ferree Road, Campobello, went to her eternal rest on Feb. 12 at age 94. Born to Joseph and Belle Smith, Alice is now reunited with them in rest, along with her devoted husband of 70 years, Dewey Ray Turner; as well as with her sister Bernice and her brothers Golie, Harold, Otto, Bruce, JD, Marion, and Lewis. Alice’s dedication to and love for her family was evident to all who knew her. Her love was and is returned in full with joy and sadness by those who survive her: Donna Diaz (Larry) and Joan Bridges (Forrest–deceased); her 6 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren—Ray Bohon: Hunter, Colton, Evan, and Edyn; Heatherly Bridges McGarity (Cameron): Molly and Wyatt; Sommer Bridges Trebilco (Jonathan): Gabrielle; Autumn Bridges Lawson (Darrin): Garrison; Joseph Bohon (Shawn): Gracie, Ella, and Daniel; Dianna Diaz Garrett (Heath): Curtis, Charlie, and Elsie;  and by many beloved  nephews and nieces.

Alice graduated from Jordan High School and went on to receive degrees in elementary and special education from Anderson Junior College, Wofford College, and the University of South Carolina. She taught over 30 years in Greenville and Spartanburg county schools. In addition to her primary career as an educator, she owned and ran The Clothes Hangar at Lake Bowen. An active member throughout her life at Motlow Creek Baptist Church, she served in countless capacities:  Sunday school teacher, WMU director, church clerk, recording secretary, and after-school ministry volunteer. Along with her husband Ray, she spent her retirement years in constant care and service to the elderly and those suffering illness–not only family members, neighbors, and friends, but also any new acquaintance she met. Even in her final years when she spent periods in assisted living and rehab centers, she never failed to rouse from her own pain when she saw other residents who were in need and without family: her greatest joy was in engaging them in conversation and finding tangible ways to help them. A woman of strong convictions, persevering character, and unshakeable faith, Alice was the bulwark of her family: the voice of their past, a motivation for their present, and a gateway to their future.

During her long life, Alice demonstrated her passion for missions and for children. Therefore, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Miracle Hill, 490 S Pleasantburg Dr, Greenville, SC 29607 or the Connie Maxwell Children’s Home, 810 Maxwell Ave, Greenwood, SC 29646
