Pattie S. Hackney Hewitt, 80, of Campobello, SC went home to be with her Lord on June,13, 2018, after a long battle with Alzheimer's. She was born to the late JB Hackney, Jr. and Nolen Hooker Hackney on September 22, 1937 in Stoneville, NC, Rockingham County.
After attending Mars Hill Junior College (now Mars Hill University), where she met her future husband, Gerald Hewitt, she finished her teaching degree at Guilford College in Greensboro, NC.
Pattie spent her life educating children, first at Wesconnett Elementary, then Cedar Hill Elementary, both in Jacksonville, FL. After moving to SC., she taught at Z.L. Madden Elementary in Spartanburg, SC for a year before moving to Campobello-Gramling School in Campobello, SC, where she remained until she retired. After 30 years of teaching, she volunteered at Grace Christian School as "The Reading Lady," continuing to instill the love of books and reading to countless children until the school closed in 2011. In gratitude for her years of service, Grace Baptist Church renamed the school library, the Pattie Hewitt Memorial Library.
She loved music and used her beautiful soprano voice in the choir, as well as duets with Gerald and other special music. She also played the church organ for years.
Pattie is survived by Gerald, her loving husband of 58 years; her sister, Ellen Hackney, and her brother-in-law, Lee Hewitt (Linda). She has three children; Leanna Hewitt Sain (Randy), Mark Hewitt and Brian Hewitt; five grandchildren, Tyler Sain (Annie), Ethan Sain, Josh Hewitt (Gini), Austin Hewitt , Brenden Hewitt; four great-grandchildren, Daisia Hewitt, Anna Hewitt, Isaac Hewitt, and Nolan Sain.
A memorial service will be held 12:00pm, Saturday, June 16, 2018 at Grace Baptist Church conducted by Rev. J.B. Godfrey and Rev. Nick Vance. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
