William Hughes Crawford, 82, of Tryon was surrounded by his family as he passed away on December 30, 2016. Born in 1934 in Hillsborough, NC, Bill was the third of five children born to Clarence Lee and Jewel Anderson Crawford.
Bill is survived by his lifetime love of 75 years, to whom he was married for 60, Dottie Dabbs Crawford. They have been together ever since the day they met in church, ages 6 and 7. Bill's family, his world, is their daughter Vicki, son Brad and his wife Hannah and their two children, Hattie and Roselee. He is also survived by two sisters; Joy Woods and Giovannia Creech. He was preceded in death by a sister, Louise Booth and a brother, Bobby Crawford.
He was a member of Landrum First Baptist Church and served in the US Army.
Moving from Hillsborough to Dallas to Atlanta to Tryon and a few locales in between, Bill, Dottie, Brad, and Vicki Lynn, were never too far from each other. The close-knit family is due in large part to the generosity of Bill, the constancy and diligence of his heart. Bill Crawford was relentless in forgiving. While he saw and experienced tough times, as all men do, Bill was steadfast and proactive in forgiveness to all, up to and including those with whom he disagreed.
Bill Crawford was also relentless in giving, anonymously. Recipients of his kindness would not know where the donations of food, money, or furniture came from. Yes, he was a restaurant and furniture entrepreneur, but his legacy is his son and daughter, their humor, their strength, their life with their own generosity of heart that Bill and Dottie instilled in them, as only a man who has loved the same woman since he was in the first grade can do. Thank you Bill for this legacy.
The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00pm Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at the First Baptist Church Landrum. Funeral services will follow at 2:00pm at the church conducted by Rev. Mark Bishop, Rev. Walter Jones and Rev. Steve Booth.
Burial will be in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens, Durham, NC on Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at 2:30 PM.
In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to honor Bill. First Baptist Church of Landrum, 300 E Rutherford St, Landrum, SC 29356.
